✈️ My Travel Experience: JFK (New York) → Bahrain → Delhi with Gulf Air
I recently traveled from JFK Airport in New York to Delhi via Bahrain on Gulf Air. Due to the ongoing regional conflicts, many airlines had reduced or suspended flights to Delhi, and Gulf Air happened to be available at a reasonable price.
The reason for my travel was personal and urgent. My mother in India is undergoing chemotherapy, and I wanted to be with her during this difficult time.
To be honest, before booking, I had read mixed reviews online about Gulf Air. Since it was an emergency, I decided to take a chance. Surprisingly, the experience exceeded my expectations and was better than many international flights I have taken in the past.
Here are some travel tips based on my journey:
✅ Arrive Early at JFK
Traffic around New York can be unpredictable. I highly recommend reaching the airport at least 3 hours before departure. If someone is dropping you off, plan accordingly. We left nearly 5 hours before the flight—2 hours for travel and 3 hours for airport procedures.
✅ Use Online Check-In
Complete your check-in online before arriving. Gulf Air had a separate baggage-drop line, which saved a significant amount of time.
✅ Carry an Empty Water Bottle
This was one of my best travel hacks. After security, fill your bottle. It keeps you hydrated throughout the journey without constantly waiting for cabin service.
✅ Order Special Meals in Advance
If you are vegetarian, vegan, Jain, or have dietary restrictions, request your meal preferences while booking. It eliminates surprises during the flight.
✅ Bahrain Transit Experience
My layover in Bahrain was approximately 3.5 hours, which was perfect. The airport was modern, clean, and easy to navigate.
Duty-free shopping was surprisingly attractive:
• Buy two liquor bottles and receive one free.
• Perfumes were competitively priced and offered excellent variety.
✅ Important Arrival Tips for Delhi Airport
Before landing, the airline distributes the health declaration form. Keep a pen handy and complete the form before arrival.
Also, keep the following in an easily accessible pocket:
• Passport
• OCI Card (if applicable)
• Pen
• Boarding Pass
The most important tip:
As soon as you enter the terminal, locate the GREEN DIGITAL KIOSKS before immigration.
Scan your passport and obtain the temporary Wi-Fi access coupon.
Without this coupon, many travelers may struggle to access airport Wi-Fi and complete required online forms. Unfortunately, I didn’t know this and had to backtrack later.
✅ Immigration and Baggage
Immigration was efficient.
After immigration:
• Trolleys are FREE (a pleasant surprise compared to many U.S. airports where carts can cost around $7).
• Collect your luggage and proceed through customs.
✅ Getting an Uber in Delhi
When exiting the airport, proceed toward Gate No. 1 for app-based pickups.
Avoid rushing into arrangements with random drivers approaching you inside the terminal.
If you have heavy luggage:
• Use an authorized porter.
• Confirm the fee beforehand.
• Request a receipt whenever possible.
Otherwise, simply book Uber through the app and proceed to the designated pickup zone.
Final Travel Essentials:
✔ Empty water bottle
✔ Snacks for the journey
✔ Pen
✔ Passport and OCI card in an accessible pocket
✔ Power bank
✔ Patience and a positive attitude
Overall Rating for Gulf Air: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Considering the circumstances, pricing, comfort, transit experience, and service, Gulf Air exceeded my expectations. I would gladly fly with them again.
Safe travels to everyone, and if you’re heading from the U.S. to India, I hope these tips make your journey a little smoother
This trip dedicated to my mother ❤️🙏
